Limbyayakha is 70 km east of Novyi Yrengoi and 15 from Korotchaevo District, which are linked by an asphalt-paved road.

The plant is situated in a region with severe climate conditions including permafrost and is the only stationary power plant in the okrug belonging to RAO UES-Russia.

Brief history

1978–1979 Preliminary research on the technical and economic basis for Urengoyskaya.

1980Order #337 by Central Committee of the CPSU and Soviet Council of Ministers (24 April 1980) and Order #219 by the Soviet Ministry of Energy (20 June 1980) Concerning the Development of Power in Tyumen Oblast Using Local Natural Gas and Transported Gas over 1981–1990 are issued laying the foundation for construction of Urengoyskaya State Regional Power Plant.

1982 Arrival of first construction crew at the plant site.

1985 Plant administration appointed.

Spring 1987 Launch of first heating boilers, including two DE-25 steam boilers (25 tons of steam per hour).

August 1987 Construction of the plant begins in accordance with Order #521 of the Soviet Ministry of Energy and Electrification (28 August 1987). This marks the first day that the plant exists as a registered company.

December 1988 Construction begun on Promploshchadka substation and Urengoi-Muyaganto 110 kW power lines #1 and #2.

August 1990 Launch of first reserve cogeneration plant.

December 1991 Launch of second reserve cogeneration plant.

1992 Launch of Urengoyskaya State Regional Power Plant at full capacity.

1994 Construction stops at the plant.

1 July 2005 Urengoyskaya State Regional Power Plant leaves Tyumenenergo and becomes independent company.

During the 1980s Urengoyskaya State Regional Power Plant was designed and constructed as a 2500 MW power station to serve the energy needs of consumers in the northern districts of Tyumen Oblast, and particularly oil-and-gas complexes in Western Siberia.

Due to the severe conditions imposed by permafrost at the site, however, reaching a capacity of 450 MW proved exceedingly difficult. Over this period, the actual and estimated energy needs of oil-and-gas complexes fell by a factor of 1.5 to 2. For this reason and lack of funding, construction of Urengoyskaya State Regional Power Plant was halted in 1994.
