Environmental Policy
Environmental Activity is a major priority for the company management. The operations related to reducing pollutant discharges into the atmosphere and water, as well as reducing production waste generation and its safe storage are among the company's primary objectives.
The company provides its Environmental Activity and environmental safety guarantees strictly on the basis of the requirements of the environment laws and seeks to improve the environmental protection system on a permanent basis.
The company has developed and approved by its Board of Directors (Minutes No. 98 of 22.01.2008) OGK-1 Environmental Policy (Russian version), OGK-1 Environmental Policy Implementing Program for 2008 – 2010 (Russian version) and Main Directions of the Environmental Policy for 2008 – 2015 (Russian version), under which the fundamental principles of OGK-1 Environmental Policy are as follows:
- acknowledgement of human constitutional right to a favorable environment;
- taking into account the environmental safety priority as a part of national security;
- energy efficiency and rational use of the natural and power resources in the process of electricity and thermal energy production, transfer, distribution and consumption;
- priority of introducing the best existing technologies over the measures to minimise environmental damage of the equipment operation (with regard to the feasibility study);
- reduction of the production wastes and environmentally safe waste management;
- adoption of preventive measures aimed at elimination of any negative environmental effects;
- international cooperation in the use of environmentally clean and power-efficient technologies, as well as promoting the research of the influence of power facilities on the environment and climate change;
- openness and availability of environmental information and immediate notification of all the parties concerned on any accidents, their environmental aftermath and measures taken to eliminate it;
- openness and availability of the environmental monitoring results of the enterprises incorporated in OGK-1 and cooperation with all the parties concerned within the process of the research conducted in the framework of the enterprise environment influence assessment procedure.
OGK-1 shows good results in the area of environmental protection, which are higher than the branch average results. The company has succeeded in achieving these results due to a favourable fuel balance structure and the use of 800 mW power generating units, which are featured by high efficiency and low environment discharges level. Despite the fact that two GRESes (thermal power generation stations) of OGK-1 consume coal, natural gas is the main fuel for the company's generating facilities, its share amounts to 92 % in 2007 fuel balance 2007. The share of the environmentally hazardous fuel in 2007 was as follows: 7.3 % for coal and 0.7 % for fuel oil.
A low pollutant environment discharge level at the OGK-1 GRESes can also be explained by the lowest fuel consumption level per generated power kWh: 306.4 g per kWh at Permskaya GRES and 305.7 g per kWh at the Nizhnevartovskaya GRES.
