Environmental Activity

A major element of implementing the JSC OGK-1 environmental policy is an early planning of the momentous and efficient environment protection measures and their subsequent high-quality fulfilment. In 2007 Company's current environment protection expenses, including measures covering expenses, environment protection oriented capital asset depreciation and discharge and waste transfer services increased by 30 per cent compared with the previous year and constituted RUB 198.478 m. Most of the expenses are spent on water protection and rational use (67.3 per cent). Water protection measures constitute 9.7 % of the expenditures and 23 % - soil conservation.

Pursuant to the Environmental Policy Implementing Program for 2008 – 2010 (in Russian), in 2008 the Company is planning to undertake a large range of environment protection measures, the most significant ones being as follows:

conducting environment impact assessment (IIA) of the new technologies introduced at the 2 power generating units with the capacity of 330 MW each at Verkhnetagilskaya GRES and of the 450 MW CCGT at Urengoyskaya GRES;
optimization of the water modes at the fly-ash separator, type MV, of Verkhnetagilskaya GRES PK-14 boilers;
emulsifier reconstruction covering the drop catcher and watering unit replacement of Verkhnetagilskaya GRES boiler No. 5;
research of sulphur dioxide binding by flying ash in fly-ash scrubber, type MV, and use of emulsifier in the process of Ekibastuz coal burning at VTGRES;
implementation of 3-stage PK-14 boiler type burning at VTGRES;
equipping VTGRES Unit 11 with up-to-date instrumentation to measure the discharge impurity concentrations;
equipping the clear water treatment process scheme of the slime discharge dumping ground (VTI160 pretreatment) of PGRES with automatic chemical monitoring instruments;
second stage reconstruction of the utility treatment plant at VTGRES;
arrangement of a recycled-water vehicle washing unit at VTGRES vehicle department;
designing the 4^th tier for ash dumping site No. 2. Development and implementation of a plan of measures directed at reducing the filtration water amount at VTGRES ash dumping site No. 2;
development of the Rules of using the Iriklinskaya GRES water reservoir;
shared participation in the reconstruction of IGRES melted water precipitation tank;
conducting operations directed at installation and adjustment of the water-measuring units at the discharge canal of KGRES;
designing a rain water disposal system for KGRES;
developing an investment substantiation for the ash dumping site reconstruction, including an environment influence assessment;
disposal of the oil sludge from the fuel oil sediment slime ground at PGRES;
developing design for introducing a dry ash loading unit from the electric filters, P-50 boilers, units Nos. 1 and 2 at Kashirskaya GRES;
repairs of IGRES slime carriage hydro insulation coating;
development of a working design for a fish protection facility at PGRES feeding canal;
growing starlet and releasing the fish to the river of Kama to compensate the loss of 350 thousand fish at PGRES;
land site surveying, including the site for UGRES feeding canal; and
developing a feasibility study and upgrading design at IGRES water intake VMU and conducting the VMU upgrading operations.
